We speak with Fernando Fernández-Valdés, CTO of the Muutech project

“To be a leading company in monitoring, with an international presence and perceived as local in each market, in continuous growth and search for even more innovative solutions that improve the competitiveness and sustainability of its clients through its services.” This is the introduction of Muutech, a project selected in the first edition of BFFood that is being mentored by José Miguel Rivero, plant director at Calvo.

We spoke with Fernando Fernández-Valdés, CTO of Muutech, to learn about this innovative project in detail.

1. Why did you decide to apply to BFFood?

With our idea and good advice, we are convinced that we can find the necessary functionalities to fit what the sector demands and, in turn, provide value to companies. For this reason, we decided to apply to BFFood.

2. How did the idea for your project come about?

The idea arose from the need we detected, in a large part of companies and industrial sectors, for greater control of production processes to guarantee their efficiency.

To improve, you must measure, which, in turn, helps make decisions based on information and not on assumptions. We provide this information in a simple way, making decision-making easy for companies, being a key element between production and business and without being an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Manufacturing Execution System (MES) or BI program, but being able to interact with any of them.

3. What do you bring that is new to the sector?

At Muutech we provide an easy way to visualize graphically the impact that a particular characteristic of raw material has on the finished product in real time, in a direct, fast and reliable manner.

4. What technologies do you use for the development of your project?

The foundation of our project is based on open source technologies and tools, which allow us to advance very quickly and have a functional product in a very short time, in addition to carrying out our own developments that enhance our main tool. We combine all of this with IoT technologies, artificial intelligence, distributed monitoring and web technologies.

5. You are part of the Galician food industry accelerator. How would you define the sector?

It is a very competitive sector, where, in our opinion, there is a large difference between large corporations that invest in digitalization and technology and SMEs that, with tighter margins, find it more difficult to invest in this type of thing.

We believe, in comparison with other industrial sectors where we have experience, such as automotive or energy, that the food industry finds it more difficult to invest in technology, so there is very great potential for improvement on the part of companies. And this is where Muutech tries to help.

6. At BFFood you have José Miguel Rivero, plant director at Calvo, as a mentor. What does this mean for you?

We are delighted with our mentor! We know that he will give us a very good vision of the sector thanks to his experience in both the operational and business sides.

7. What is BFFood representing for you and for your project?

BFFood is giving us great visibility within the Galician food sector. In addition, it offers us the opportunity to attend networking events, visit production plants and learn firsthand how the industry works.

Furthermore, being able to have a mentor from a large company, such as Calvo, helps us work on the right path.

8. How do you expect your project to be when the BFFood acceleration program has finished?

One of our main objectives is to learn as much as possible about the food sector in order to have a minimum viable product at the end of BFFood. We believe we are on the right track and that Muutech will be well received.

9. Why would you recommend BFFood to other entrepreneurs?

It is a fantastic way to establish synergies between companies based on the needs of the Galician food sector, one of the most powerful both regionally and nationally.

10. What would you like your company’s claim to be and what you would like to be seen as different from other companies?
