OSIGris, the free software that helps small and medium-sized farmers with their digitalization
Behind oSIGris is a group of young entrepreneurial engineers who identified the opportunity to help small and medium-sized farmers with their knowledge in the digitalization of their crops and plantations. How? Through completely free software.
After being selected as one of the accelerated projects in the first edition of BFFood, oSIGris has the mentorship of Juan A. Vázquez Gancedo, General Director of Bodegas Martín Códax, and José Carlos Vila Costas, General Director of Kiwi Atlántico. To learn how this initiative emerged and how its development is progressing, we spoke with Rubén Mella, the sales and management manager.
- What motivated you to apply to BFFood?
We considered the opportunity to participate in an accelerator with such important support as GAIN and the major tractor companies with extensive experience in the sector to be very interesting. They can provide us with first-hand help and advice based on their experience, all of which contributes to improving the development of our project and its adaptability to market needs.
- How did the idea for your project emerge?
In a university class! The professor proposed to the students, among whom was our CEO, José Senande, an exercise applying topography to shellfish gatherers. He transferred that same concept to agriculture and after adapting it to market needs, we developed oSIGris, the first free software designed especially for small and medium-sized farmers.
- What do you bring that is new to the sector?
Free software that helps farmers in their digital transformation. After conducting various studies, we identified a large number of small and medium-sized farmers who do not have the financial capacity to access the market software that would help them with their digitalization.
For them, we created oSIGris, software with three basic tools: digital field notebook, weather information, and pest and disease alert system, which is also completely free.
- You address the commercial technological solutions challenge posed in the first edition of BFFood. What technologies do you use for the development of your project?
The oSIGris software consists of a mobile app and a web app connected to a database that enables connection and information storage.
- How would you define the food sector in which you work?
The food industry has great growth potential. Traditionally family-owned small and medium-sized companies aspire to continue growing and to be leaders in both the national and international markets.
At oSIGris we face the future with very positive data: 75% of agricultural plots in Spain are less than 10 hectares, so we have a large undigitalized market niche that we are targeting.
- At BFFood you have the mentorship of two great professionals in the sector. What do they bring you?
It is a great opportunity for us with their experience and professionalism. Without a doubt, we will try to make the most of all the knowledge they can share with us and apply it both in the present and in the future.
- What is the goal you have set with BFFood?
oSIGris began BFFood with the minimum viable product, without having the marketable part available. During these months of acceleration, we expect to complete its development and obtain the first sales.
- What is special about BFFood?
BFFood offers startups the ideal means for their growth and mentors of an extraordinary level with very good willingness.
- Finally, what makes you different from other companies?
The great differentiation of our company and what we intend to be our hallmark is the digitalization capacity we offer small and medium-sized farmers free of charge.
We want to position ourselves as leaders and drivers of the digitalization of small and medium-sized farmers, offering them all the advantages we have at our disposal free of charge.
