ICEX highlights the boost that BFFood provides to the FoodTech sector in Spain
Foods & Wines From Spain (FWS), the ICEX brand for the international promotion of food and beverages, has just published the second edition of the report Foodtech in Spain: Moving Spanish Food System Forward, a document that addresses the consolidation of the FoodTech sector within the food value chain in Spain and highlights the initiatives developed in this field throughout 2021.
Among them, the report highlights the work of the accelerator Business Factory Food (BFFood), promoted by the Xunta de Galicia and managed by the Galician Food Cluster (Clusaga), which will support 44 foodtech projects in 2022, and has just launched the call for applications for its IV Edition.
The report also highlights the strong increase in national and international investment to drive innovation in the FoodTech sector as one of the milestones that make 2021 a crucial year in this field.
Service provision and mobilization to boost the sector
Foodtech in Spain: Moving Spanish Food System Forward highlights the work of AECOC and FIAB, which provide a wide range of services and bring together a large part of the business fabric of the food and beverage industry in Spain. Furthermore, it claims the fundamental role played by clusters in facilitating collaboration and mobilization of different agents to access European Union aid. This is the case of the Next Generation Galicia Food Technical Office of Clusaga and Igape, aimed at facilitating the attraction of Next Generation Funds.
The report also notes that the food and beverage industry in Spain is the main activity of the state’s manufacturing industry. According to the latest data published by the INE, the sector’s turnover amounts to €130,795.8 million, representing 23.3% of the industrial sector, 22.1% of employed persons, and 19.2% of the added value. Additionally, this industry encompasses 30,573 companies, 15.6% of the Spanish business fabric.
